This boss was kind of the make or break moment for me in deciding if I wanted to continue with the game for videos. While I think the game is great and the combat can be enjoyable, it feels like it definitely wasn't built for no damage, and I wasn't really having fun with it - at least not with traditional approaches. There's so many attacks that have nearly zero animation before they deal damage, and there's so many multiple hit attacks that it feels nigh impossible to consistently parry every single one each time. However, I think I've kind of figured out the formula for combat in this and how it's meant to be played, which makes it feel much more reasonable going forward.

My initial approach was to go into bosses with an emphasis on trying to time the parry for every individual hit and combo. That's been the norm for nearly every other combat game with parries involved. However, I just don't think this is feasible with the way the game is built, and I think it's counterproductive to the design of the game. As I said before, there's many starter attacks with little to no animation which you're bound to be hit by, and there's a lot of attacks with many hits per second. I think the better (and intended) approach is to be constantly attacking the boss while also blocking to prevent these near instant start-up attacks, but also weave in parries for known combos and openings. This allows you to remain on the offensive the entire time, you're not going to have a random near instant attack hit you while you're pushing the boss, it then allows you to weave in parries afterwards. It'll make the overall combat feel much more fluid and consistent.

It's a bit of a break from the usual approach in other games of trying to perfect parry everything and being ready for everything, but I think it's how this game was intended to be approached. They've always said as much that it's not your traditional combat game. It won't be as flashy or satisfying not hitting perfect parries constantly, but with 50+ bosses having combos like this, I think it's the only consistent way to get them done no damage without spending countless hours on each boss mastering every single possible attack. The bosses are too unpredictable and the combat is too fast flowing for that to be any way consistent, and this feels like the intended way to play.

That all being said, I'm planning to stick with it for the foreseeable and see if my opinions change. Lastly, I wasn't sure how to approach multiple phase bosses like this one, whether to restart from the very first phase or just continue on from the second phase. I think it's pretty acceptable to just do each phase individually though, as they both feel like their own unique fight, and it seems to be the norm for this game.

My plans for coverage with Phantom Blade Zero is similar to other games: all bosses, no damage, max difficulty. I'll be posting videos of every boss on Hellwalker difficulty no damage individually, which is the max difficulty you can pick on the first playthrough. There's also the 66 days mode, which is the same difficulty as Hellwalker but with limited wipes. I'll likely go back for a clear of that after my first playthrough. Otherwise if there's any guides or tutorial I can post, I'll be sure to do so.

Phantom Blade Zero is an wuxia action role-playing game developed and published by the Chinese studio S-Game. The player assumes the role of Soul, an elite assassin serving the Order, who is framed for the murder of the Order's patriarch and thus hunted by the Order's members. Inflicted with a fatal wound to his heart and revived with a tainted heart, he is left with only a limited number of days to live. Set in the Phantom World, the story is centered on his mission to restore his heart and unravel the conspiracy that has condemned him.
