President Donald Trump says the United States has reached a new security agreement with Denmark and Greenland that would give Washington permanent control over Greenland’s security and allow it to expand its military presence on the strategically important Arctic island. The deal would also prevent US adversaries from establishing military bases or making sensitive investments in Greenland. The deal is expected to be signed on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly next week. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement recognises Denmark’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination. Greenland PM Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the deal strengthens Greenland’s security.
