Stand-off over contested Orange Order loyalty march in Northern Ireland

A stand-off over a contested road in Portadown, Northern Ireland, is continuing after talks between Garvaghy Road residents and the Orange Order broke down on Thursday evening.

Residents have launched a fresh legal challenge to try to block the march from going through their community, with a court hearing originally set for Friday postponed until Monday to allow more time for a possible compromise.

The road is controversial because of its history: during Orange Order marches in the 1990s it was the scene of serious disorder that largely ended with the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. Last week, after nearly 30 years, the loyalist Orange Order, who want Northern Ireland to remain part of the UK, was given permission to march through the nationalist area, where residents want Northern Ireland to become part of the Irish Republic.

Al Jazeera's Milena Veselinovic reports from Portadown, Northern Ireland.
