La obra de José Aparicio El año del hambre de Madrid (1818), pasó de erigirse como una de las pinturas más populares y controvertidas en la España del siglo XIX, a languidecer en un depósito en el que pasa desapercibida entre público y la historiografía en nuestros días como una anécdota de tono local.Aclamada y odiada, aupada por el arte oficial, difundida por la prensa y popularizada en obras literarias, musicales, teatrales o estribillos, alcanzó una condición pop antes de que se acuñase el término, durante el reinado de Fernando VII; después fue quedando fuera del discurso de la pintura española y de las propias salas del Prado paulatinamente, hasta ser valorada, en la actualidad, como un recuerdo de la historia local de Madrid. Ejemplifica como pocas pinturas los vaivenes de juicio en la historia del arte y la dificultad con la que los grandes iconos culturales perduran y se consagran como tales.
