Fatty liver disease is classified into different grades based on the amount of fat accumulated in the liver:
1. Grade 0 fatty liver: 5% or less liver fat, with no fatty liver symptoms
2. Grade 1 fatty liver: 5 to 33% liver fat, often without noticeable symptoms or elevated liver enzymes
3. Grade 2 fatty liver: 34 to 66% of liver cells contain fat, which can interfere with normal liver function

When fat accumulates in your liver cells, it inhibits their ability to function properly. Fortunately, the liver has an incredible capacity to regenerate.

You could still have a fatty liver, even if your liver enzymes aren’t elevated. Imaging tests, such as an ultrasound or MRI, can help identify fat accumulation in the liver.

Common fatty liver causes include:
• Fructose
• Refined sugars and starches
• Choline deficiency
• Seed oils

Increasing choline-rich foods and healthy fats can support long-term liver health and help reverse fatty liver.

Intermittent fasting is one of the best ways to support your health if you have a fatty liver. An occasional prolonged fast may be especially beneficial.
