Spain teenager Lamine Yamal opened his FIFA World Cup scoring account with a historic goal during Spain’s Group H clash against Saudi Arabia at the Atlanta Stadium on Sunday.The 18-year-old’s strike provided a much-needed boost for the European champions after their disappointing 0-0 draw against debutants Cape Verde, as Spain continue their pursuit of a second World Cup title.
At 18 years and 343 days old, Yamal became the second-youngest player to score for Spain in World Cup history. The record still belongs to his Barcelona teammate Gavi, who found the net at the age of 18 years and 110 days.
Yamal also surpassed the record of Barcelona legend Lionel Messi, who was 18 years and 357 days old when he scored his first World Cup goal for Argentina against Serbia and Montenegro at the 2006 tournament.
