Un vuelo de Air India con destino a Londres se estrelló el 12 de junio poco después de despegar de Ahmedabad, en el estado de Gujarat, al oeste de India. El Boeing 787-8 despegó a las 13:38 hora local con 230 pasajeros, dos pilotos y 10 tripulantes. Poco después, la aeronave se estrelló sobre un área residencial, cerca de una residencia de médicos a solo un kilómetro del aeropuerto, causando una gran explosión y un incendio devastador. Hasta 200 personas se encontraban en el edificio impactado. Según confirmó la policía local, al menos 265 cuerpos han sido trasladados al hospital civil de la ciudad, una cifra que supera ampliamente las 242 personas a bordo, lo que confirma una gran cantidad de víctimas en tierra. El avión llevaba gran cantidad de combustible por tratarse de un vuelo de largo alcance. Las autoridades confirmaron que el piloto tenía más de 8.000 horas de experiencia. El primer ministro Narendra Modi calificó el hecho como una tragedia indescriptible. El aeropuerto fue cerrado y se desplegaron equipos de rescate.
