En janvier 1984, la police découvre, dans les buissons d’un monastère grec, une grande valise brune contenant, entre autres, rien de moins que La Madone Esterházy de Raphaël. Le tableau perdu compte parmi les sept chefs-d’œuvre de maîtres italiens volés en novembre 1983 au musée des Beaux-Arts de Budapest. Mal planifié, le cambriolage a été accompli avec une certaine désinvolture. Un tournevis a distraitement été abandonné sur place, orientant, comme d’autres indices, les autorités hongroises vers la piste d’un groupe de gangsters italiens qui séjournaient à Budapest au moment des faits. Sur le tournevis, la police relève des empreintes : celles d’un certain Giordano Incerti. Face caméra, celui-ci revient aujourd’hui sur son rapprochement, par l’intermédiaire d’un ami d’enfance,avec la bande mafieuse à l’origine du vol. Quant aux enquêteurs hongrois et italiens, ils retracent la chasse à l’homme transfrontalière qui leur a permis, moins de deux mois après la disparition des toiles, de procéder à l’arrestation de Giacomo Morini, un autre comparse – avant qu’une information anonyme ne leur livre la cachette exacte des tableaux, au cœur du Péloponnèse.Un récit haletant, digne d’un polar.
