Saiful warga Jember, Jawa Timur mengatakan, kapal tenggelam lantaran dihantam ombak besar.
Akibatnya kapal berhenti dan kemudian mulai miring.
Kru kapal pun memberikan pelampung sebagai langkah penyelamatan.
Namun, Saiful memilih langsung terjun ke laut meski tak memakai pelampung.
"Kejadian kapal tenggelam cepat sekali. Saat kru kapal membagikan pelampung, saya langsung terjun ke laut, karena kapal sudah miring. Waktu itu kira-kira pukul setengah satu dini hari. Sekitar pukul 04.00 WIB saya berhasil diselamatkan. Saya tidak tahu keberadaan teman saya," kata Saiful.
Sementara dari video yang beredar, suasana saat itu sangat tegang hingga teriak takbir.
Sebelum tenggelam, awak KMP Tunu sempat meminta pertolongan melalui radio.
Hal tersebut disampaikan Kasi Keselamatan Berlayar Penjagaan dan Patroli KSOP Tanjung Wangi, Ni Putu Cahyani.
Setelah meminta pertolongan, kapal tersebut tenggelam pada pukul 23.35 WITA, atau sekitar 25 menit setelah berlayar dari Pelabuhan Ketapang, Banyuwangi.
Pada pukul 00.18 WITA tim gabungan telah dikerahkan untuk melakukan pencarian.
Hingga Kamis (3/7) malam, tercatat 29 orang ditemukan dalam keadaan selamat dan 6 orang ditemukan meninggal dunia.
Dengan data tersebut, masih ada sekira 30 orang lagi yang belum ditemukan dalam insiden kapal tenggelam tersebut.
