Restoring coral reefs to save the ocean | Christina Egger | TEDxPraça Gil Eanes
Europe’s deep seas harbor some of the planet’s most stunning coral ecosystems—cold-water coral gardens that flourish in the dark and chilly depths. But while tropical coral reefs have long been the focus of global conservation, Europe’s corals have remained largely in the shadows. Until now.In this inspiring TEDx Talk, learn how marine scientists are using groundbreaking coral restoration techniques like breeding and seeding baby corals to revive these vital but threatened ecosystems. Adapted from proven tropical reef methods, this work marks a turning point in ocean conservation in Europe.
Cold-water corals may be out of sight, but they’re no longer out of mind. Discover why protecting them matters for biodiversity, for climate resilience, and for the future of our oceans. Christina Egger is a marine scientist passionate about protecting the ocean’s most overlooked ecosystems. She earned her PhD at the Centre of Marine Sciences in Portugal, where she focused on developing pioneering methods to reproduce and grow threatened native coral species. Her research laid the foundation for restoring Europe’s cold-water coral gardens, biodiversity hotspots hidden beneath the surface.
Now, Christina is working to take these efforts further, scaling up coral restoration techniques and bringing them into real-world conservation initiatives. Her mission: to help Europe’s forgotten reefs recover and thrive in the face of growing environmental threats. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
