Celebrations in downtown Salem, home to large Halloween festivities with its “haunted happenings” festival that includes parades, street performers and vendors. Salem is also known as the Witch City, as it’s connected to the trials in colonial Massachusetts in the 17th century when more than 200 people were accused of witchcraft, with 19 of them, mostly women, hanged. Ireland is the birthplace of Halloween, a tradition dating back over 2,000 years to ancient pagan ceremonies known as Samhain (pronounced Sah-win). On October 31, it was believed the veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest, allowing mischievous spirits to cross over. Many modern traditions — from wearing masks to ward off spirits to carving pumpkins — were carried abroad by Irish emigrants during the Great Potato Famine, spreading Halloween around the world.
The Derry parade captures that ancient spirit, bringing the city alive with music, fire displays, theatrical performances, and a truly immersive atmosphere. Festivals across Ireland, including smaller local celebrations, aim to attract international visitors eager to experience the spooky holiday at its origin.
