Los últimos datos de la Organización Mundial del Comercio muestran que las exportaciones mundiales de servicios prestados digitalmente se dispararon hasta alcanzar los 4,25 billones de dólares estadounidenses en 2023, lo que supone un aumento de cuatro veces desde 2005. Estos servicios han crecido mucho más rápido que los bienes tradicionales y otros tipos de comercio de servicios, con una tasa de crecimiento medio anual del 8,2 % entre 2005 y 2023. Los servicios prestados digitalmente, como los que se comercializan en línea o a través de plataformas digitales, representan ahora casi el 14 % del total de las exportaciones mundiales, frente a solo el 8 % en 2005.
