US-Iran tensions: Nuclear talks set to take place in Geneva on Thursday
The United States and Iran prepare for indirect negotiations in Geneva as both sides signal diplomacy but deep mistrust remains.The United States and Iran are set to begin a third round of indirect talks in Geneva to discuss Tehran's nuclear programme. Tensions remain high, even as both sides say they prefer a diplomatic solution. Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, has met with his Omani counterpart in Geneva, who is facilitating the talks. Araghchi says Tehran believes a fair and balanced agreement is within reach. Previously he has said that Iran will under no circumstances develop a nuclear weapon while insisting the country has a right to peaceful nuclear technology. US officials accuse Iran of advancing missile capabilities they say could eventually reach the United States.
