Second volet : liée au principe de liberté et à la notion de bénédiction divine, la figure du self-made-man contribue à la construction d'un capitalisme à l'américaine - l'État doit garantir les droits fondamentaux, mais ne pas s'immiscer dans l'économie.
De leur côté, les individus qui s'enrichissent décident eux-mêmes à qui ils vont reverser leur argent grâce à un système de mécénat leur permettant de payer peu d'impôts. Avec l'industrialisation fulgurante, le rêve américain est érigé en arme idéologique, mais le krach de 1929 remet en cause tout le système politique : le New Deal de Franklin D. Roosevelt permet enfin l'intervention de l'État, notamment à travers les assurances chômage et vieillesse. Lorsque la crise frappe à nouveau, Ronald Reagan réintroduit à l’inverse un libéralisme pur et dur – conception reprise par Donald Trump, pour qui l'état social est contraire à l'identité américaine. Aux yeux du dirigeant, le patriotisme joue un rôle central dans la construction nationale – tout comme l'armée, qui doit permettre aux États-Unis de remplir la mission dont ils s’estiment investis : sauver le monde ou, plutôt, la place de choix que le pays y occupe.
