Una miniera abbandonata nello Yunnan e sei minatori, che diventano poi tre morti con sintomi identici al #Covid. Il loro sangue finisce in un laboratorio a #Wuhan. Otto anni dopo, un pugno di investigatori dilettanti riporta alla luce quella storia sepolta e scopre che il virus più simile al SARS-CoV-2 arriva proprio da quella grotta.E' l'estate 2012, contea di Mojiang, Cina. Sei uomini vengono calati in una vecchia miniera di rame abbandonata per spalare via anni di guano di pipistrello. Nel giro di settimane si ammalano: tosse, febbre, respiro corto. Tre di loro moriranno. I loro campioni di sangue finiscono in un laboratorio a nord, in una città che nel 2020 il mondo intero imparerà a conoscere: Wuhan.
Per otto anni questa storia resta sepolta, come se qualcuno preferisse così. Poi, mentre il Covid corre per il pianeta, un pugno di investigatori dilettanti sparsi nel mondo — analisti di dati, ex insegnanti, nessuno di loro virologo di professione — la riporta alla luce. E fanno una scoperta che toglie il fiato: il parente più prossimo mai identificato del SARS-CoV-2 arriva proprio da quella miniera. Lo stesso virus custodito, sotto un altro nome, nel laboratorio di Wuhan.
Da quel momento, ogni domanda su quell'origine viene bollata come complotto, e chi la fa viene marchiato, isolato, messo a tacere. Ma dietro quel muro di silenzio ci sono nomi cambiati, porte chiuse, strade sbarrate da camion guasti proprio al momento giusto — e un progetto di ricerca, presentato diciotto mesi prima della pandemia, che proponeva di fare a un virus come questo esattamente ciò che oggi lo rende così pericoloso e contagioso per l'uomo.
Chi ha lavorato, in maniera così ostinata, per rendere impossibile anche solo porre la domanda?
