When Reality Becomes Editable, Who Stays in the Picture? | Ziyao Zhuang | TEDxWLSA Shanghai Academy
This speech begins with the classic scene from The Emperor's New Clothes, where a child speaks the truth. It argues that comedy is not just simple entertainment—it is a powerful tool that allows ordinary people to reveal the hidden truths of our time. Using examples like the black humor of World War II soldiers and jokes about shortages during the Soviet era, the speech shows how comedy wraps hard truths in laughter, becoming a safe way for people to express taboo topics and share collective emotions. The speech then deeply examines the three core forms of courage found in comedy: first, the courage to touch the collective pain of the era and create empathy; second, the courage to see beyond mainstream beliefs and amplify the voices of minority groups; and third, the courage to question authority by using humor to break down power and pretense, awakening people's critical thinking. The speech also makes a clear distinction between true comedy and cheap jokes that make fun of vulnerable groups, pointing out that empathy and reflection are the true heart of comedy. Finally, the speech encourages people to embrace the spirit of courage found in comedy—not to avoid the truths of our time, not to stay silent in the face of injustice and hypocrisy, and to dare to express their real thoughts. Together, individual voices can build collective power to break the taboos of our era. Student of metaphysics, master of overthinking, and part-time absurdist. After all, to think is to be confused, and to be confused is to be fully human. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
