È un sistema in cui formalmente gli istituti della democrazia non sono stati eliminati, per esempio ci sono le elezioni, ma in cui il governo è riuscito a poco a poco a erodere gli spazi delle opposizioni e la autonomia degli organismi di controllo, cioè a colpire sostanzialmente la libertà di stampa e l'indipendenza della magistratura.Sicché la Turchia è un ottimo caso per guardare cos'è una autocrazia competitiva. La scorsa settimana il Parlamento turco i parlamentari si sono azzuffati e picchiati tra maggioranza e opposizione in occasione del giuramento del nuovo ministro della Giustizia, il procuratore capo di Istanbul, quello che nel 24 il 25 ha attuato una selvaggia repressione contro il partito di opposizione, il Partito popolare Repubblicano, arrestando centinaia e centinaia di membri del partito con perquisizioni spesso arbitrarie.
