While traveling, wandering through the streets of Da Nang, Vietnam, I stumbled upon a tiny, almost hidden barber shop offering one of the most bizarre ancient treatments I’ve ever seen. And to my surprise, the person performing it was a beautiful Vietnamese female barber with the calmest, most confident presence imaginable. I could tell this lady barber had a special skill — graceful, precise, and totally unfazed by how unusual this ritual looked to me. Naturally, I, Jason Rupp, had to give it a try.

The moment I sat in her chair, I wondered why I would be doing this. An ear cleaning is one thing, but an eye cleaning? My eyes instantly watered as she leaned in close, focused and steady, making the whole experience feel both intense and strangely soothing. She brought out tiny metal tools, tapping and scraping around my eyelids with expert care — all while maintaining this serene, professional expression that made me trust her completely, even when I had no idea what was happening next.
Then came the moment I’ll never forget: she lifted my eyelids (yes — lifted them) and guided the herbal smoke underneath. I was blinking like crazy, half laughing from the sheer weirdness of it all, but she stayed perfectly composed, moving with a kind of graceful confidence that made the bizarre treatment feel like an ancient art form. Watching her work, you could tell she’d done this countless times, blending tradition with a gentle touch that kept me surprisingly relaxed despite the sweat dripping into her eyes.
