Your neck hump or upper back hump may not be caused by what you think. Press on the hump. Is it soft and spongy like a fat pad or hard, firm, and rigid? This can help determine the underlying cause and the best way to address it.
A Dowager’s hump can be a postural or structural issue. Postural problems can often be corrected with the right stretches and exercises. A structural Dowager’s hump involves wedged vertebrae, often caused by osteoporosis, and requires an X-ray for diagnosis.
A buffalo hump is different. It involves a fat pad at the base of the neck and is often associated with elevated cortisol, insulin resistance, and Cushing's syndrome.
If your neck hump is associated with osteoporosis, focus on calcium, collagen, trace minerals, magnesium, vitamin D3, vitamin K2, and weight training to support stronger bones.
If you’re dealing with a buffalo hump caused by a fat pad, check your fasting insulin levels. A high-carb diet and frequent eating may contribute to insulin resistance. A low-carb diet and intermittent fasting may help address the underlying metabolic problem.
