Cut Out ANYTHING in Photoshop Without Selection Tools
Photoshop's Remove Background thickens thin branches and fills the gaps, so here is the channel method that keeps every twig.Every color image already holds three black-and-white maps of light, and one of them almost always separates your subject from its background better than any selection tool can. That is what channel masking is. You are not drawing a selection; you are finding the version of the image that already did the separating for you.
I'll show you two methods. The first is Blend If, which hides pixels based on brightness and gives you a cutout in about 10 seconds. Then I'll show you how to convert that blend into real transparency with a Smart Object, so an adjustment layer can't undo your work. The second method is for when no single channel separates everything, and you have to build a channel Photoshop never gave you using Calculations.
If you've ever clicked Remove Background on a tree, a fence, or flyaway hair and watched the fine detail turn to mush, this is the fix. I've used this exact technique on almost every TV and web poster I work on.
