Is this world normal? A Skeptical Probabilist View | Ercan (尔江) Engin Kuruoglu | TEDxTsinghua SIGS
Most of us heard the “normal” distribution for the first time in high school or freshman year in university when our performance in a course was measured via a Bell-shaped curve. It is called “normal” since it is believed that all natural phenomena follow this statistical law. This assumption rules every human-made system from telecommunications to water dams, from energy grids to satellite missions. The reign of ‘normality’ in our engineering minds goes hand in hand with our societal sub-conscious association of positive meanings with being ‘normal.’ Normal is unthreatening, predictable, easy. However, the very same societies also demand best performance in professional life, in exams, in profits, etc and the engineering systems aim for the best performance. A whole myth around the average, that is the mean statistics while what is asked for is maximum, that is the extreme statistics. In this brief talk, we will challenge this contradiction and provoke questions on whether AI needs to go beyond the normal distribution. Ercan E. Kuruoğlu received his PhD degree in information engineering from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, in 1999. He is currently working as a Full Professor at Tsinghua University Shenzhen International Graduate School. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
