El rey que se forró reventando un país - Leopoldo II (Bélgica)
¿Cómo puede un rey europeo convertirse prácticamente en el dueño de un territorio 80 veces más grande que su propio país? Y, sobre todo, ¿cómo acabó aquel negocio del caucho convertido en uno de los episodios más brutales del colonialismo europeo?Esta es la historia de Leopoldo II de Bélgica y el Estado Libre del Congo, un territorio africano que durante décadas fue controlado como posesión personal del monarca. Bajo la apariencia de una misión humanitaria destinada a llevar comercio, ciencia y civilización a África, se levantó un sistema destinado a extraer marfil y, especialmente, caucho al menor coste posible.
Cuotas imposibles, trabajos forzados, aldeas incendiadas, secuestros, ejecuciones y mutilaciones terminaron formando parte de un sistema que generó enormes beneficios mientras la población congoleña sufría unas consecuencias devastadoras.
Pero también veremos cómo comenzaron a aparecer testimonios, fotografías e investigaciones que hicieron imposible mantener durante más tiempo la imagen que Leopoldo II intentaba vender al resto del mundo.
Una historia de colonialismo, propaganda, dinero y una cantidad de barbaridades que cuesta creer que ocurrieran hace poco más de un siglo.
