Downtown Freddie Brown Pours in 20 Quick Points with Style

March 19, 1978 - Downtown Freddie Brown was the Vinnie Johnson before Vinnie Johnson, the Microwave before the Microwave. Ironically, Brown starred at a time before the modern colloquial definition for Downtown existed (aka the 3-point line). In the game above—a late-season run against the San Antonio Spurs—Brown finished with 20 points in 27 minutes in a 116-98 win.

For those wondering, Brown's downtown shooting prowess did indeed translate into the NBA 3-point era. Brown was ninth in the NBA in 3-pointers made during the league's first season with the line while also leading the NBA in 3-point percentage (.443). All told, Brown shot close to 39 percent from the 3-point line over the league's first four seasons of the 3-point era.

The Sonics team featured above would go on to reach the 1978 NBA Finals, where they'd fall to the Washington Bullets. Brown & Co. would get their revenge the following season, defeating the Bullets in the 1979 Finals to earn Seattle's one and only NBA championship.
