A Chinese tourist, Hu Congtai, has been detained in Ladakh and Kashmir after allegedly travelling through restricted and sensitive areas while violating Indian tourist visa rules. His movements triggered concern when security agencies detected unusual internet activity, including searches related to CRPF deployments, Article 370, Kashmir security, and strategically sensitive zones.
Hu, a 29-year-old physics graduate from Boston University, entered India on a visa permitting visits only to specific Buddhist religious sites, including Varanasi, Agra, Delhi, Jaipur, Sarnath, Gaya and Kushinagar. Instead, he travelled to Leh, Zanskar, Srinagar, Harwan Monastery, Shankaracharya Hill, Hazratbal, Mughal Gardens, Awantipur ruins and several restricted Army-monitored zones.
Authorities discovered that he obtained an Indian SIM card, stayed in unregistered guest houses, and moved across locations not covered under his approved travel route. His detention has now triggered a large crackdown across Srinagar, with police inspecting hotels, houseboats, and homestays for Form-C violations involving foreign travellers.
