NOTE FROM TED: This talk only represents the speaker’s personal political views, understanding, and experiences. We've flagged this talk because it falls outside the content guidelines TED gives TEDx organizers. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdfIn this powerful TEDx talk, Esam Boraey shares his journey from political prisoner during Egypt’s Arab Spring to pro-democracy advocate in the United States, exploring the personal cost and necessity of dissent. Through stories of protest, exile, and activism, Esam reveals how silence allows authoritarianism to grow and why democracy depends on the courage to dissent. Drawing connections between Egypt and America, Esam challenges audiences to reconsider freedom not as a guarantee, but as something that must be continually defended. “Silence Is How It Starts” is a moving call to resist apathy, embrace civic courage, and recognize dissent as the conscience of democracy. Esam Boraey is an author, speaker, and scholar whose work bridges activism, academia, and global democracy. A leading voice on democratic transformation and Middle Eastern politics, he was one of the early organizers of Egypt’s pro-democracy movement during the Arab Spring. Now based in the United States, Esam serves as Project Manager at Cornell University’s Center on Global Democracy and is completing his Ph.D. in Comparative Politics and Political Economy. His writing and talks explore how societies rise against authoritarianism, the global struggle for freedom, and the lessons democracy movements can learn from one another across borders. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
