Disponible jusqu'au 23/05/2025Édifié en 1067 en surplomb de la forêt de Thuringe, le château de la Wartbourg a traversé mille ans d'histoire tumultueuse, jusqu'à devenir un emblème de l'Allemagne.
Le château de la Wartbourg domine majestueusement la forêt de Thuringe, dans le centre de l’Allemagne, depuis près de mille ans. Construit à l’initiative du comte Louis le Sauteur, l’imposant édifice a pour vocation d’asseoir l’influence de la dynastie des Ludovingiens. Au cours du XIIIe siècle, ce véritable centre culturel accueille notamment le mythique "tournoi des chanteurs de la Wartbourg", un concours de ménestrels qui inspirera des générations de poètes, d'écrivains et de penseurs. En 1521, le réformateur Martin Luther y rédige sa traduction du Nouveau Testament, faisant entrer la forteresse dans l’histoire. Avec la mythique fête de la Wartbourg, organisée en 1817 par des confréries étudiantes qui appelèrent à l’unité nationale, le château s’impose comme un symbole de liberté et d'égalité. Mais sous le IIIe Reich, instrumentalisé par le régime nazi, le château devient le cadre d’opérations de propagande, avant d’être investi après la guerre par la RDA, qui profitera d’une restauration de l’édifice pour redorer sa propre image.
Précieux témoin
Au fil de spectaculaires prises de vue et de témoignages d’experts, ce documentaire revisite mille ans d’histoire. Plusieurs fois bombardée, frappée par la foudre ou victime d'incendies, la Wartbourg reste l’un des monuments les mieux conservés de la fin de l’époque romane, notamment grâce aux travaux de restauration menés à la fin du XIXe siècle par l'architecte historiciste Hugo von Ritgen, qui ambitionnait de le transformer en château idéal. La forteresse, qui a survécu à tous les bouleversements politiques, constitue aujourd'hui un témoignage vivant de l'histoire complexe de l'Allemagne autant qu’un symbole de liberté, de pouvoir et de culture.
