Trump backs full release of Epstein files in sharp reversal
US President Donald Trump has reversed his position and told Republican lawmakers to vote for the release of the controversial Epstein files.It follows weeks of presidential criticism for those planning to force the release, with Trump claiming he was the victim of a Democratic Hoax.
Jeffrey Epstein, a former friend of Trump’s, was found dead in his prison cell in 2019, while awaiting trial for child sex trafficking.
Trump says if a bill to release the documents is passed by Congress, he will sign it into law.
But the files may never see the light of day, even if they’re approved.
The president’s remarks also come amid an unusually public rupture with parts of his political base, including a highly visible split with Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, once among his closest allies.
Trump has since distanced himself from Greene, saying he would endorse a challenger to her in next year’s midterm elections “if the right person runs”.
