Tensions between India and Pakistan continue to intensify over the Indus river system, with Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif warning of possible war. The remarks come amid ongoing friction over India’s effective suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty following the Pahalgam terror attack last year. New Delhi maintains that the treaty’s future cannot be separated from Pakistan's support for cross-border terrorism, and says cooperation has been undermined by security concerns. India has also moved to fast-track water infrastructure projects and maximise its utilisation of allocated river resources, while continuing to share flood-related data with Pakistan. At the heart of the dispute remains the 1960 World Bank-brokered treaty, now emerging as a major flashpoint in already strained bilateral relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
