Ducati has a bit of a secret as far as how their engines rev so high, reaching 16,500 RPM from their 1.0L Desmosedici Stradale R V4 used in the Panigale R. You might already know they’re using a short piston stroke to maximize RPM, or that they use desmodromic valves, allowing for crazy high valve-train speeds. But there’s another trick up their sleeves, which stems from the fact that they’re using a 90-degree V4, but the crankshaft pins are separated by 70 degrees. Not a nice clean number like 0, 90, or 180 degrees, like you might see elsewhere, but 70 degrees. Why? Well in this video, the finale of three episodes on Ducati V4 engines, we will finally get to the bottom of it.
