Irán y Estados Unidos protagonizaron un nuevo cruce diplomático en la Organización de las Naciones Unidas a raíz del programa nuclear de Teherán. La tensión se produjo después de que Irán fuera elegido como uno de los vicepresidentes en una conferencia de un mes para revisar el Tratado de No Proliferación de Armas Nucleares. El presidente de la conferencia y embajador de Vietnam ante la ONU, Do Hung Viet, explicó que Irán fue seleccionado como uno de los 34 vicepresidentes por un grupo de países no alineados y otros Estados miembros. Washington calificó la designación como una afrenta al Tratado. En respuesta, el embajador iraní ante el Organismo Internacional de Energía Atómica rechazó las acusaciones de Washington y criticó el papel de EE.
