This video is about:
🚨 Why Did the U.S. Release 14.7 Million Screwworms in Panama? 🪰

It might sound bizarre, but it's actually a brilliant example of science solving a serious problem. The U.S. and Panama are working together to protect livestock, wildlife, and even humans from a dangerous parasite: the New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax).

🧬 What Makes Screwworms Dangerous?
Screwworm larvae don’t just feed on dead tissue—they burrow into the living flesh of animals and even humans, causing painful wounds that can lead to severe infections and death if untreated. This parasite once devastated cattle populations across the southern United States, costing the livestock industry millions annually.

🌿 The Solution: Sterile Insect Technique (SIT)
To control the screwworm population without harmful pesticides, scientists developed an innovative approach called the sterile insect technique. Here’s how it works:

Millions of male screwworm flies are bred in specialized labs.
These males are sterilized using radiation, making them incapable of producing offspring.
The sterilized flies are released into the wild, where they mate with wild females.
Since no larvae result from these matings, the population gradually declines.
🇵🇦 Why Panama?
The U.S. and Panama established a permanent "biological barrier" in the Darien Gap, the dense jungle region between Panama and Colombia. This location is ideal because it’s the narrowest point connecting Central and South America, making it easier to prevent screwworms from spreading northward.

💪 The Impact
Thanks to this program, screwworms were eradicated from the United States by 1982 and from most of Central America by the early 2000s. The barrier in Panama continues to protect livestock and wildlife across the Americas.
