A very fragile peace... signs of internal instability... and now, another outbreak of violence involving a minority group. Does Syria's interim government need to do more to maintain control of the country?
Israel says it carried out airstrikes on Syria to protect the Druze community. But were they also a tactic to disrupt Syria’s revival?
Long-held rivalries and internal fighting between disparate communities are, unfortunately, nothing new in Syria.
In March, breakaway government troops attacked Alawites — accused of sympathizing with the former rulers. In April, fringe fighters targeted Druze for allegedly making insulting comments. In June, ISIS terrorists bombed a Christian church in Damascus. Come July, fighting between Bedouin tribes and Druze left more than 300 dead.
Is Syria’s Sunni-led government failing in its promise to unify the country?
In the wake of the violence, Syria’s president addressed the Druze people, reassuring them they are an integral part of the nation whose rights and freedoms are a priority for the government.
They were comforting words. But many groups in Syria are still waiting to see action to back them up.
Then there are the external factors threatening Syria’s stability. Israel says its airstrikes and drone attacks in Sweida and Damascus were an effort to protect the Druze. The Syrian government sees it differently.
So were Israel's actions purely altruistic — or does a fractured Syria serve a greater purpose for them?
Coming up, we’ll debate:
What is Israel’s game plan? Does it really want peace for Syria?
What more does Syria's interim government need to do to ensure unity and stability?
And what does this all mean for regional diplomacy?
