Original vs. Copycat Dessert Shops in Pakistan
I went looking for Hyderabad’s famous Haji Rabri Wale to try rabri, one of Pakistan’s most popular traditional desserts. But there was one problem: I accidentally ended up at a similarly named rabri shop just a few doors away!So I decided to try both.
In this Pakistani food adventure, I taste rabri at both shops in Hyderabad, Sindh, compare the original with its similarly named neighbour, and find out which one I actually prefer.
Rabri is a traditional South Asian milk dessert made by slowly reducing milk until it becomes thick, rich and creamy. You’ll find different versions of rabri across Pakistan and India, and Hyderabad is particularly famous for it.
HOW TO AVOID COPYCAT RESTAURANTS IN PAKISTAN & INDIA
This is something travellers should watch out for across Pakistan and India. When a restaurant, sweet shop or street food stall becomes famous, you can sometimes find other businesses nearby using very similar names. In some cases, different shops may also have a genuine family connection, with relatives running separate businesses under similar names.
Before travelling across town for a famous restaurant or food stall:
• Check the exact name and address, not just the first few words of the business name.
• Compare the storefront with recent photos online.
• Look at recent reviews and see whether customers mention the “original” branch.
• Check the restaurant’s official website or social media when available.
• If several similarly named shops are beside each other, ask locals which one is the original.
• Don’t assume the first matching shop you see is the famous one. That’s exactly what happened to me!
And remember, being a newer or similarly named shop doesn’t necessarily mean the food is bad. Sometimes you might even prefer it. The only way to settle that was to try both.
