Nach 11 Tagen massiver US-israelischer Luftangriffe gegen den Iran trat Donald Trump (79) am späten Montagabend in seinem Golfklub in Doral in Florida vor die Kameras. Die Operation „Epische Wut“ laufe nach Plan, man sei dem ursprünglichen Zeitplan sogar weit voraus, so Trump. Der Krieg sei „so gut wie beendet“. Allerdings glaubt er nicht an ein Kriegsende in dieser Woche.
In seiner Rede enthüllte Trump nach 11 Tagen den Auslöser für die Offensive gegen das islamistische Regime: Laut US-Informationen soll der Iran heimlich mit dem Bau einer neuen Anlage zur Gewinnung von Atombrennstoff begonnen haben. Trump rechtfertigte den Angriff als Präventivschlag: „Wenn ich sie nicht zuerst angegriffen hätte, hätten sie zuerst unsere Verbündeten angegriffen“, sagte der Präsident gegenüber Reportern und fügte hinzu: „Sie wollten den Nahen Osten übernehmen.“ Ein Angriff auf US-Verbündete sei innerhalb einer Woche zu „100 Prozent“ sicher gewesen.
