Burkina Faso performers turn war trauma into theatre
A group of performers from Burkina Faso are using acrobatics, dance and theatre to highlight the trauma inflicted on children by more than a decade of armed conflict in their country.The show, titled 'Souffle' (Breath), depicts the fear and chaos experienced by young people caught up in violence linked to groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and ISIL.
According to the United Nations, more than 2,000 children in Burkina Faso suffered grave abuses between 2022 and 2024, including killings, abductions, recruitment as child soldiers and forced displacement.
The production, which blends circus arts with storytelling, has been performed in neighbouring Ivory Coast and aims to give a voice to those affected by the conflict.
