В глубоких кратерах у лунных полюсов находятся области вечной тени, где температура может опускаться примерно до минус 240 °C. Острое как бритва лунное вещество, постоянная радиация и резкие перепады температур ставят под угрозу каждую миссию. В некоторых из этих кратеров может скрываться древний водяной лёд, но непроглядная темнота сильно осложняет исследования: крутые склоны и почти полное отсутствие солнечного света мешают ориентироваться. На обратной стороне Луны ещё одну проблему создают высокие края кратеров и пересечённый рельеф, а древние лавовые тоннели могут укрыть от радиации, но безопасно исследовать их всё равно крайне сложно.
