Redemption Road, Episode 3: Finding Community and Purpose in Prison With CrossFit
For Gino Aviles, Erik Jensen, and Peter Van Volkinburg, Redemption Road CrossFit provided community and purpose both inside the walls of prison and outside of it upon their releases. Finding CrossFit while incarcerated offered an outlet for not only fitness, but also bonding amongst one another and continuing education. When their workout group began to grow, they brought the idea to prison administration to host a class. To their surprise, the idea was approved. It was a snowball effect from there, with many other inmates joining the daily workouts and eventually being offered the CrossFit Level 1 Certificate Course to learn more about the methodology and earn their coaching credentials. The men speak with emotion about their experiences being released from prison and how the CrossFit community continues to impact their lives every day.—
