In 1986, a diving instructor was scouting the waters off a tiny Japanese island, looking for a good spot to bring tourists. Instead, 80 feet down, he found something that has divided scientists ever since. Rising out of the seabed was a massive stone structure with flat terraces and sharp, straight edges. What looked like giant steps carved into the rock, stacked up like a sunken pyramid. It was the size of a building, and it looked unmistakably made. This is the Yonaguni Monument. And if a human hand really shaped it, there is a staggering problem. This stretch of seabed was above water at the end of the last Ice Age, roughly 10,000 years ago.
