Alfred the Great saved Wessex from the Vikings, but his son Edward the Elder wanted more than survival. This episode follows the king who turned defense into conquest and pushed the Anglo-Saxon world toward the creation of England. After Alfred’s death, Edward faced a dangerous succession crisis as his cousin Æthelwold claimed the throne and sought Viking support from York, Essex, and East Anglia. The revolt ended in blood at Holme, but the Viking threat did not disappear. Edward and his Mercian allies then struck back. At Tettenhall in 910, the kings of York were destroyed, opening the way for a systematic campaign against the Danelaw. Working with his sister Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, Edward built fortresses, seized borderlands, crushed East Anglia, and captured key towns including Derby, Stamford, Nottingham, and Leicester. But victory came with a ruthless political move: Edward absorbed Mercia and became the most powerful ruler south of the Humber. From Ragnall’s rise in York to Edward’s fatal campaign at Chester, this is the story of conquest, family rivalry, Viking collapse, and the king who prepared the road for Æthelstan, the first ruler to claim all England after decades of war and shifting royal loyalties.
