Rencananya, Indonesia akan menjadi negara pertama yang dikunjungi Paus pada 3 hingga 6 September 2024.
Paus Fransiskus akan tercatat sebagai Paus ketiga yang datang ke Indonesia. Dua Paus sebelumnya yakni Paus Paulus VI (3 Desember 1970) dan Paus Yohanes Paulus II (8-14 Oktober 1989).
Paus Yohanes Paulus II bahkan sempat berkunjung ke Medan sekitar 35 tahun silam, tepatnya pada 13 Oktober 1989. Kedatangan Paus menjadi kenangan tak terlupakan bagi banyak orang, terutama Monsignor Alfred Gonti Pius Datubara OFM Cap.
Pada saat itu, Mgr AG Pius Datubara adalah Uskup Gereja Katolik Roma untuk Keuskupan Agung Medan.
Uskup yang lebih akrab disapa Pius Datubara ini pun turut menceritakan kesaksiannya ketika bertemu langsung dengan Paus Yohanes Paulus II di Lapangan Tuntungan.
"Wajahnya bersinar dan penuh kegembiraan. Pada saat itu, banyak orang berkumpul di Medan, seluruh Sumatra bahkan ada yang dari Jawa juga," ucap uskup berdarah Batak tersebut.
Di usianya yang sudah genap 90 tahun, pendengaran dan daya ingat dari Mgr Pius Datubara kian menurun. Namun ia tetap berusaha mengingat rangkaian demi rangkaian acara krusial 35 tahun yang lalu.
