Die Gefahr lauert überall: Das unsichtbare Gift heißt Blei – und es zerstört seit Jahrzehnten Leben in Sambia.Kopfschmerzen, Müdigkeit, Magenschmerzen, Gedächtnisverlust: Für viele Menschen in Kabwe in Sambia ist das Alltag. Doch am härtesten trifft es die Kinder. Das Schwermetall schädigt ihr Gehirn, bremst ihre Entwicklung – und hinterlässt Spuren für ein ganzes Leben.
Die Ursache ist bekannt: eine alte Bleimine, von den Vereinten Nationen als einer der am stärksten verseuchten Orte der Welt eingestuft. Rund 200.000 Menschen sind betroffen, fast jedes Kind hat gefährlich hohe Bleiwerte im Blut.
Wir treffen Mütter wie Jane, deren sechsjährige Tochter Elizabeth aufgrund ihrer Vergiftung in der Schule kaum noch mitkommt. Und ehemalige Arbeiter wie Mathias, der jahrzehntelang ungeschützt in der Mine tätig war – und heute von einem toxischen Erbe spricht, das niemand aufarbeiten will.
Während die Mine seit über 30 Jahren stillsteht, kämpft die Bevölkerung weiter mit irreversiblen Schäden. Eine Sammelklage soll endlich klären, wer Verantwortung trägt.
