В 19 веке трёхэтажный каменный дом возле Красных Ворот с причудливыми угловыми балконами украшала мемориальная доска: «Здесъ родился Михаилъ Юрьевичъ Лермонтовъ 1814 года 2 октября».В 1939 году и лермонтовский дом, и стоявшую неподалёку церковь Трёх Святителей, где, по преданию, крестили Лермонтова-младенца, снесли. Но и на сталинской высотке появилась мемориальная доска с надписью: «На этом месте находился дом, где 3 (15) октября 1814 года родился великий русский поэт Михаил Юрьевич Лермонтов».
И хотя самого мемориального дома давно уже нет, город хранит память о человеке, который сказал: «Москва, Москва! Люблю тебя как сын, как русский, — сильно, пламенно и нежно!»
