Spirit Airlines collapse: Thousands stranded as carrier shuts down
We learned this weekend that Spirit Airlines is going out of business after 34 years of offering discounted fares to their customers. LiveNOW’s Shawna Khalafi is speaking with aviation reporter Oriana Pawlyk with POLITICO as we learn more from Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. At a press conference Saturday, Secretary Duffy said airlines were reportedly stepping up to offer open seats to Spirit Airlines employees who may be trying to get home.According to the Department of Transportation, several airlines are offering capped ticket prices and relief for Spirit customers for a limited time, and customers should be prepared to show receipts for Spirit purchases: JetBlue and Southwest are offering relief for 72 hours, though Southwest's is only available in person at an airport ticket counter; Delta is offering relief for 5 days; and United is offering relief for 2 weeks online.
