Rethinking the Place of Play in School | Mark Millhone | TEDxColorado Mountain College
We've been taught in school that work and play are opposites, but is it really true? Mark Millhone's talk redefines play in a way that's supported by research and helps us rediscover a place for play in our schools, our work, and in our lives. Mark Millhone is a groundbreaking educator, award-winning filmmaker and published book author. He began a career in film, graduating from Columbia University Film School where his student film, Christmas in New York, won an Academy Award for best student film. He went on to write several screenplays and direct the feature film Universal Squadrons. His memoir, The Patron Saint of Used Cars & Second Chances, was published by Rodale Books. As an educator, he created the first BFA program in film launched in partnership with a major Hollywood studio and served as Dean for Studio School, Los Angeles. He recently directed the world premiere of Keith Addison Tyler's Trying to Be Normal is Driving Me Crazy at the Landmark Theatre in Long Beach, CA. Mark is a partner in the conscious media company Valid & Required Productions (started with his life partner, filmmaker and artist Ashley Mosher) and is an Associate Professor at the Isaacson School of Communication, Arts and Media at Colorado Mountain College. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
