Humpback Whale Bubble Net || ViralHog

Occurred on January 2, 2024 / Gerlache Strait, Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica

"The video depicts the observation of one of the most beautiful natural displays on earth: The humpback whale bubble net in Antarctica. Krill is a small shrimp-like creature that doesn't exceed 2 cm in length but can be found in billions, forming one of the most important food sources for many creatures, including whales. Humpback whales have evolved in order to harness tons of krill a day to reach their gigantic size. One of the strategies they use is the bubble net, a cooperative choreography in which multiple whales blow a curtain of bubbles around a swarm of krill to bring them together in a compact cloud, allowing the whales to intake as many krill as possible. These bubble curtains have a spiral shape that follows sacred geometry and the Fibonacci spiral.
I recorded the video during one of my Antarctic expeditions on board an expedition cruise ship. Whales were feeding all around the static ship, but this particular group of whales came so close that we could see the spiral of bubbles from the upper deck, a rarity to see in person as most of the images are taken by drone. This is one of the most beautiful wildlife encounters I've ever had and something I dreamt of seeing for years!"
