Nel Regno delle Nebulae
Centosei anni fa, il 26 aprile del 1920, alle ore 08:15 pomeridiane, Harlow Shapley e Heber Curtis salivano sul palco del Baird Auditorium, presso lo Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, a Washington DC.Da quella ribalta essi avrebbero proposto ai colleghi, giornalisti e curiosi presenti la propria visione dell’universo: una sola grande Galassia con il Sole ben lontano dal suo centro secondo Shapley, una moltitudine di isole cosmiche come la Via Lattea secondo Curtis.
Nel sostenere le proprie ragioni, i due illustri scienziati si rifacevano alle osservazioni e ai dati che essi stessi avevano prodotto, approfittando degli strumenti più avanzati del tempo.
Quel confronto è passato alla storia come il Grande Dibattito: da esso non sarebbe emerso un “vincitore”, poiché il “verdetto” sarebbe stato emesso qualche anno più tardi, grazie allo storico contributo di un altro gigante: Edwin Hubble.
A quella straordinaria vicenda, all’avvincente percorso che vi avrebbe condotto e agli esiti di quel confronto è dedicato il mio libro “Quando l’universo diventò infinito. Shapley, Curtis e la nascita del cosmo moderno” (Castelvecchi, 2026). Il primo in lingua italiana dedicato al tema fondamentale di come l’umanità sia arriva a cogliere la disarmante vastità del cosmo che ci circonda. Una storia ricchissima di colpi di scena e dettagli sorprendenti.
In occasione del XVI Anniversario del Grande Dibattito, vi invito alla mia live di lunedì 27 aprile, alle ore 21:00, per una chiacchierata proprio su quegli incredibili temi.
