Boeing knew of flawed part linked to UPS plane crash, safety board says
We learned new details last week related to the deadly UPS plane crash that took place in Kentucky last year. Reports are now showing how investigators believe a previously failing engine-mount part contributed to the fatal Kentucky plane crash despite Boeing warning owners about the issue in 2011. Previously, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said investigators found cracks in some of the parts that held the engine to the wing. LiveNOW’s Shawna Khalafi is learning more about the aircraft’s history and how repairs were handled with Aviation Attorney, Ladd Sanger.Boeing had documented there were four previous failures of a part that helps secure the MD-11’s engines to the wings on three different planes, but at that point the plane manufacturer "determined it would not result in a safety of flight condition." Airport surveillance footage shows the left engine and pylon separating from the wing shortly after the airplane rotated, with a fire igniting on the left engine, so says an NTSB report that was released earlier. According to the report, the left engine later slammed onto the ground, and a fire ignited near the left pylon attachment to the wing, which continued until the plane crashed into a nearby storage yard and two buildings.
