The court issued the warrant after denying Duterte’s motion to defer or recall the arrest order. Bail has reportedly been set at P120,000 for each of the three counts, while Duterte’s lawyers have confirmed that they received the warrant and intend to post bail as soon as possible.
The Philippines Department of Justice said the court found probable cause to hold Duterte for trial on all three counts and ordered the issuance of the arrest warrant. The DOJ also said it respects the court’s ruling and reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law.
Duterte’s counsel, Atty. Paul Lawrence Lim, said the Vice President has no intention of evading the law and will continue to pursue available legal remedies, including questions surrounding jurisdiction.
The case stems from remarks attributed to Duterte in which she said she had hired an individual to kill President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez if an alleged plot against her succeeded. The allegations and court proceedings have intensified political tensions in the Philippines.
