The 6 Minutes the President Has to Launch WW3 (Presidential Nuclear Football) - MINUTE BY MINUTE

The President may have just six minutes to make a decision that could launch World War III.

There is no giant red nuclear button. Instead, America’s nuclear command system revolves around the “Football,” a briefcase that follows the President everywhere, and the “Biscuit,” a small card containing the authentication codes needed to prove the President’s identity. If an incoming nuclear attack is detected, the clock starts immediately. Warning satellites and radar systems verify the launch, military commanders brief the President, strike options are presented. The President must authenticate, and decide whether to retaliate before enemy warheads potentially destroy America’s command structure and nuclear forces. In some scenarios, that decision window can shrink to only minutes. And history shows how dangerous that can be.
False alarms have previously convinced military systems that real nuclear attacks were underway, while submarine-launched missiles can dramatically reduce the amount of warning available.
Once the President gives the order, an encrypted Emergency Action Message is transmitted to missile silos, submarines, and bomber crews. Then the launch crews authenticate it. Turn the keys. And fire. There is no recall button once the missiles are in the air.

This is the nuclear decision process, second by second.
