I Made a Better Bitcoin

84 million coins instead of 21 million. Five-minute blocks instead of ten. Halvings every two years instead of four. The math works, so why didn't Satoshi do it that way?

Cory Klippsten tests each change. The coin count runs into the 53 bits of double precision that much of Bitcoin's software uses, which puts a safe ceiling at about 22.5 million coins. Five-minute blocks double the share of each interval lost to network delay. And the halving schedule was a free choice, which Satoshi called "an educated guess." Even there, 50 coins is the largest starting reward in multiples of ten that fits.
